Prof. Nikos Donos is the Director of Research, Professor & Chair of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, at the Centre for Oral Clinical Research (COCR), Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). He is an internationally respected academic and clinician with a strong focus on translational research and clinical excellence in periodontology and implant dentistry.
Prof. Donos has received numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including the 2024 International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Distinguished Scientist Award in Periodontal Disease and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) Distinguished Scientist Award. His earlier accolades include the IADR Periodontology Group Award in Periodontal Regenerative Medicine (2011), the AAP Clinical Research Award (2019), and the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) Basic Science Research Award (2004).
He holds multiple honorary and adjunct professorships at leading international institutions, including the University of Hong Kong, Griffith University (Australia), UCL Eastman Dental Institute, and the University of Queensland.
Prof. Donos is the Past President of the British Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry (BSP), and a Board Member of the Osteology Foundation, where he chairs the Science Committee. He also serves as Chair of the EFP Education Committee (2023–2029), is a long-standing member of the EFP Postgraduate Education Committee, and sits on the EFP Board. His role includes the accreditation and examination of EFP-accredited postgraduate programmes across Europe.
With over 275 peer-reviewed publications, five edited textbooks, and 15 book chapters, Prof. Donos is widely published in the fields of periodontology and implant dentistry. Clinically, he brings extensive experience in the treatment of severe periodontal and peri-implant diseases, including regenerative therapies, soft tissue management, and dental implant placement. These advanced therapies form the foundation of his national and international lectures and educational initiatives.
