Prof. Shogo Takashiba is the Professor of Periodontal Science at the Department of Pathophysiology, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Japan. A leading figure in periodontal research, he has been actively engaged in advancing the fields of periodontology, periodontal medicine, and inflammation biology for over three decades.
Prof. Takashiba earned his D.D.S. in 1986 and completed his Ph.D. in 1990 at Okayama University. His academic career began at the same institution, and he has since held several visiting research appointments, including at the Eastman Dental Center (USA), the University of Southern California, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) in the United States. He was appointed full Professor at Okayama University in 2002.
His research spans a wide array of topics, including mild anti-biofilm therapeutics using natural ingredients, chronic inflammation regulation, periodontal diagnostics, tissue regeneration, and systemic links within periodontal medicine. Prof. Takashiba has authored more than 210 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals and remains a highly cited researcher in the field.
He is currently serving as President of the International Academy of Periodontology (2023–present) and was formerly President of the Periodontal Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) (2021–2022). His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, the Lion Research Award from the Japanese Society of Periodontology, and several other distinctions from international and national scientific societies.
Prof. Takashiba continues to lead research in periodontal disease mechanisms and therapies, and regularly lectures internationally on periodontal regeneration, diagnostics, and the systemic interplay between periodontal and general health.
