Prof. Wim Teughels obtained his dental degree from KU Leuven (Belgium) in 2000. He specialized in periodontology and defended his doctoral dissertation at the same university in 2006, also earning the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) certificate in Periodontology. In 2007, he joined the KU Leuven Faculty of Medicine as an assistant professor, where he taught Periodontology and Human Anatomy. He is now a full professor at KU Leuven and the University Hospitals Leuven, leading the Periodontology and Oral Microbiology research group.
His research focuses on periodontology and oral microbiology, particularly bacterial adhesion, microbial interactions, antimicrobials, and probiotics. He has authored over 200 publications in international journals and contributed to more than 10 book chapters. His work has earned him five national and three international awards, and he is a sought-after speaker on probiotics in oral healthcare, presenting at conferences worldwide.
In 2012, Prof. Teughels was appointed associate editor of the Journal of Periodontal Research and contributed as an editor to Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology.
